        Is a person with chickenpox infectious?
A person with chickenpox is highly contagious. The virus spreads through the air from person to person. For example, if you have not already had chickenpox, you're likely to catch if:

  • You are in the same room as someone who Chickenpox for more than 15 minutes, or
  • You have "face-to-face" contact with someone with chickenpox as a conversation.
  • It takes 11-20 days to develop symptoms after the virus (the "incubation period").

        A person with chickenpox is contagious from two days before the first rash appears until all the spots have crusted over (usually about 5-6 days after rash onset). When a child is infected or to keep out of school or daycare and as far from "at risk" people who may get a serious illness if they chickenpox. Note: persons with chickenpox should not travel by air until six days after the last spot appears.
